Just another blog in my life

I started learning VB.Net since 2003 and my knowledge in this object-oriented language enabled me to get along with ASP.NET easily. Web applications are getting very popular nowadays, probably just because these applications can cater more number of users in just a single setup. As long as there is server connectivity, there is no need to individually install web applications to the workstations in your network.

Simple database applications like a basic alumni search page were my first creations in ASP.Net. Later, as I progress, I also developed more complex database applications. The latest among these is the XSystem 2007, an ASP.Net web application aimed to provide a complete solution for the automation of our university’s Registrar’s Office. The XSystem 2007 was built on ASP.Net 2.0 powered by ASP.NET AJAX web extension and it uses Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express as its backend. The system was first tested when we had an exhibit last PSU Biennial Celebration showcasing the Institute of ICT’s projects. It turned out to be effective during the demo enrolment that is why its first real implementation was set to be on the 2nd Semester 2007-2008 enrolment. Initially this pilot testing will be for the Urdaneta Campus ICT students only.

The enrolment for 2nd semester already started and as planned, the XSystem 2007 was deployed. As of now, we can say that the system works as expected and the only difficulty that we encounter so far is the hardship in encoding all the students information and permanent records. We are very optimistic that right after the enrolment period is over, the benefits will be felt immediately not only by the students but also by administration most particularly the Office of the Registrar. It is now targeted for a cluster-wide implementation next academic year.

I have been working in PSU for five years now. Of course compared to some, 5 years is nothing considering that many even reach more than 20 years serving in the university. I never expected that in my early career in the university, I will be given the privilege of handling administrative responsibilities. At the age of 30, I am presently the Program Dean of the Institute of ICT and at the same time the MIS Chief of the PSU Eastern Cluster. This unexpected opportunity and privilege turned out to be a very controversial one. The truth is, it is something unacceptable to some. This people do not actually realize the fact that being in this position is something that I never really ambitioned nor did I make any effort to influence the administration to give me these designations. I keep on telling them that I can easily and willingly gave it up anytime if that is what they want.

It just so happened that the administration do not think in the same level as they do. There are still some few good men in the system who clearly believes that true service in the government is measured by performance not by popularity or unreasonable “by the book” mentality. Some even find time to monitor and check your every entry in the logbook and forget about what have you done or you’ve been doing for the good of the university. Blame it on our culture some will say, Filipinos are really not after what is good but most of the time only thinks of their personal ambitions and desires. I do believe that this is not true for all Filipinos but I do believe that many of them do. Professional jealousy can be found in almost all organizations and this is a fact that we all should live with. What is ironic is the fact that most of the time, people who gets envy with others do not actually deserved to feel such. People who usually complains are the people who are actually the problems themselves.

I do not know if I will be with PSU for the rest of the coming years to come. I am not taking away the possibility of greener pastures that may knock in my career. There is only one thing I am sure of, as long as I am with the system, I will always give my genuine dedicated service that PSU deserves from me. The XSystem 2007 is a concrete evidence of what I am trying to say here. I will do my best to make this project a success without thinking of any reward in return. If ever I will think of one, then let that reward be the fact that if it will be implemented in the university, then let it be my legacy to PSU. A legacy that will be a part of the PSU history as the years unfold. In a time where maybe I am still part of the PSU system or maybe not anymore.
