Do they really hate Microsoft?

I have met a lot of web developers who are saying that they go to PHP rather than ASP.NET because they hate Microsoft or simply because they are not pro-Microsoft. I actually respect their personal stands on this but there are just some things that I can’t really understand about these people.

First thing that I have noticed is that these people uses a lot of Microsoft’s products, starting with the operating system they use down to their basic desktop applications. I mean, if they don’t appreciate Microsoft’s software then why not use Linux and have their PHP programming through LAMP? If they are not pro-Microsoft then why not turn to OpenOffice for their basic desktop applications?

Well talking mainly on the web development aspect, most of these PHP-0riented people say that they do not like ASP.NET because of several common comments like high webhosting cost, development tools are expensive, and some even say they hate development with the use of “wizards” which is obviously pointing out on one thing, and that is, they are actually commenting on something which is obviously they do not really know or understand. You cannot actually make a fair comparison on two things without being knowledgeable on both sides. The best thing to do if you are really a web developer is of course to learn both of them. With the right knowledge from an honest learning process, one can clearly show the strengths and weaknesses of both technologies and learn to use the right technology to what really is needed or required by the situation.

They are not pro-Microsoft but they are also Microsoft product users. They do not like ASP.NET but they don’t know how to use it. They don’t like expensive products but actually in the real world, the price is very much related to quality. Buy a cheap shoes and have it fit for use in just a few months but buy an expensive one and use it for years.

The only way to come up with a fair judgment is to always keep in mind that Intellectual Honesty is always the Best Policy.

I actually know of a lot of open source gurus starting to convert to microsoft technologies due to the .NET programming interface.

.NET must be that good to convince die hard open source gurus to shift over.

I think this only happens here in the Philippines where people are born and live mostly with Microsoft Products. Not a single internet cafe/shop here provides Macintosh/Linux based systems. I myself used Microsoft before but as I aged and learned the craft more, I’d stick with open source. Cheers!
