Just a reaction to an article…

I have read an article which is actually about the ever popular debate on PHP versus .NET issue. It was actually written by a guy who said that his purpose for writing the article is to help PHP developers who are being harassed by over-exuberant .NET fanatics, have a sort of “self-defense”. He also mentioned some common misconceptions about the comparison of PHP to .NET. I certainly agree with him when he pointed out that you cannot actually compare PHP with .NET, it is like comparing a truck to a road, because PHP is a scripting language and .NET is an application framework, an environment where you can develop and execute an application. Therefore, PHP should not be compared to .NET itself but instead it can be compared to the programming languages that runs on the .NET framework.

He mentioned that .NET is the future platform for all Microsoft Technology and is not aimed solely on the Internet. I would like to comment that .NET is not only the future platform for Microsoft technology but also opens the potential for other non-Microsoft technology and that includes PHP. Although initially used by Microsoft to corporate intranets, .NET is now rapidly starting to become dominant also in the Internet. With the releases of free Express Edition Tools, .NET technology dramatically attracted many developers to shift to a more rapid application development approach setting aside the cost of development tool issue.

In fact, most developers turn to PHP because of their back-end which is MySQL, a free database management system and service which is available in almost all webhosting packages. But now, with the easy integration of .NET front-ends to MySQL backends, again this issue is slowly getting insignificant.

Both PHP and .NET languages are great web development weapons, it actually depends on the learning curve of the developer that will determine which of them will be adapted. PHP’s down-to-earth programming approach as he said is somewhat being traded to .NET’s rapid development approach, this is because in today’s business world, time is always been a top concern among companies competing against each other in a world made small by the cyberspace.

My last comment on his article is that, if PHP developers really think that they have a superior technology, then there is no way that they should feel harassed especially by these so-called over-exuberant .NET fanatics.
