This is a simple tutorial on how to create a simple secured website with the use of Session variables in ASP.Net. It will also demonstrate some of the basics of an ASP.Net page
With Visual Web Developer Express, create a new Website. Click on the Website Menu from the Menu Bar and add two more Webforms (ASP.Net pages) that do not use the code behind technique. Name the first one as login.aspx and the other one as mainpage.aspx. You can then remove the default.aspx and its vb code file from the solution explorer. With this, we simply mean, we are not going to use the code behind method in our application. Read more
Just a reaction to an article…

I have read an article which is actually about the ever popular debate on PHP versus .NET issue. It was actually written by a guy who said that his purpose for writing the article is to help PHP developers who are being harassed by over-exuberant .NET fanatics, have a sort of “self-defense”. He also mentioned some common misconceptions about the comparison of PHP to .NET. I certainly agree with him when he pointed out that you cannot actually compare PHP with .NET, it is like comparing a truck to a road, because PHP is a scripting language and .NET is an application framework, an environment where you can develop and execute an application. Therefore, PHP should not be compared to .NET itself but instead it can be compared to the programming languages that runs on the .NET framework. Read more
Do they really hate Microsoft?

I have met a lot of web developers who are saying that they go to PHP rather than ASP.NET because they hate Microsoft or simply because they are not pro-Microsoft. I actually respect their personal stands on this but there are just some things that I can’t really understand about these people. Read more

In 1996, Microsoft’s ASP or Active Server Pages was introduced. Since then, it has evolved to become one of the foremost dynamic website product and several versions of it was released. It turned out to be one of the best web development tools probably due to the ease with which complex pages and applications can be created combined with the ability to use custom components and existing Microsoft and third party commercial components through the Component Object Model (COM/COM+) architecture. Connecting .NET application to a MySQL Database is as easy as 123

I have a website client that commissioned me to create a website with some portions of it are active server pages that uses a database to display vital informations for its users. I developed the website using ASP.NET technology but immediately after showing him the homepage design of his website, told me to use MySQL for the database. Although it is not the popular choice for an ASP.NET application database, he opted to use MySQL probably because of its low cost in terms of hosting fees. Besides, there is no great deal in granting his request because in .NET, connecting to a MySQL database is as easy as 123. Read more

I have already deployed two ASP.NET content management systems, the PSU Eastern Cluster Community Server (http://202.91.163.10/cs) and the Pangasinan State University Official Website (http://www.psu.edu.ph). Both websites uses Microsoft SQL Server, version 2000 for the Eastern Cluster Site and 2005 Express for the PSU Official Site. The Eastern Cluster Site’s database is working well since November 2006 and have not encountered any errors as of now. With the number of postings in the site, its database actually is a large one now. Read more

http://www.psu.edu.ph with its new look and feel

The Pangasinan State University’s Official Website is powered by DotNetNuke, an open-source content management system that is built on ASP.NET technology and MS SQL Server 2005 Express back-end support. Before, PSU website uses the default DNN Blue Fixed-width skin and was very much simple that time.
With the abundant availability of nice DNN skins free for downloads, it is very easy to play around different DNN Site looks and feel. Some of these skins, especially those with top caliber designs are actually being sold while a lot with fair to quality looks are also being given free.
The best part is, you can actually create your own skins and make your website an originally-designed one. I happen to read a “How to create your own DNN skin” tutorial and discovered that it is actually not that complicated to create your own skins. You can start creating a simple one and then later transform your design into a more sophisticated design.
Now with some combinations of DNN skin designs, I changed the PSU Website’s look and feel with what it is right now. Visit the site and see what it becomes at http://www.psu.edu.ph. You can also open it directly at http://202.91.163.10/psu.edu.ph to skip the url redirection.
