Linux creator Torvalds said that people can expect more improvements in Linux graphics, wireless networking capabilities, and even virtualization despite his personal lack of interest in the area according to an article of InformationWeek.

With new releases of Linux’s Kernel, it continues to test the limits of open-source development process. It continuously adds more features while maintaining quality and stability.

InformationWeek tried to get some perspective of what lies ahead for Linux in 2008 by interviewing Torvalds via email. Topics asked to Torvalds includes development process, new features, and whether he is concerned about potential patent litigation. Read more

Master in Information Technology…some concerns

MIT nowadays is a very in demand course especially for IT educators because CHED requires them to be a holder of such degree in order for them to qualify as instructors in the IT courses offered by higher learning institutions in the Philippines. Actually, a lot of scholarship programs are being offered in relation to this course. Colleges and universities are also doing their best to offer such course because as of now, very few are offering it leaving IT graduates with limited choices where to enroll.

There is no great difficulty in the offering of such program in a certain institution because the recommended curriculum for this is actually very much similar to the common ICT curriculum of the undergraduate program. The only very noticeable difference is the prefix word “Advanced” in the curriculum courses and the removal of most general education subjects making it a very technical course by design.

Since anyone can simply copy and paste this recommended curriculum and course descriptions from an existing MIT curriculum, the big question lies not on the approval of the program’s courses but is more focused on the faculty pool who will teach these technical subjects. Are they really capable of teaching these MIT subjects? Or just simply pretend to know everything and passes the burden to the students by letting their students do all the research and reporting? These MIT instructors must somehow prove themselves really knowledgeable in the subjects they are teaching because it is the first step in gaining the respect of their students. How are they going to prove this? Simple, THEY MUST TEACH, THEY MUST CONTRIBUTE, THEY MUST SHOW FIRST BEFORE THEY DEMAND WHAT EVER REQUIREMENTS THAT ARE NEEDED TO BE SUBMITTED IN EACH SUBJECT. Remember that although in the masteral program students must research and contribute more, they also expect that at least they will learn and get somethings also from their instructors especially since this is a very technical course.

In my personal opinion, I think CHED should at least set a test that will qualify one to teach in the MIT program. This is a very technical course so why not have these instructors passed a certain IT certification exam first before they are allowed to teach in the program? The PHILNITS exam I think can be a very reliable measure for this purpose. What do you think?

PhilNITS Certification Review now incorporated as one of the ICT Subjects under Advance Topics

Recently, I have attended a seminar-workshop of PhilNITS (formerly JITSE) at DMMMSU Mid-La Union Campus which was sponsored by CHED. The importance of having an internationally recognized IT certificate like the one that you can get from taking the PhilNITS exam was explained clearly. Being a certified IT professional surely increases one’s marketability in the IT job market and it also affects greatly decisions of most industries in terms of job hiring and recruitments. It is an edge and an easy way to place yourself to high paying job positions.

PhilNITS is actually a foundation that works hand in hand with the government in the pursuit of producing globally competitive IT work force that can compete with other countries like India. They coordinate with CHED and gives free training kits to the academe in order for the different IT institutions to enhance their existing curriculum in accordance to the present demands of the industries.

I was one of the participants during the seminar-workshop who were given a CD that contains the curriculum, resources, and training modules that can be used by IT educators in incorporating the PhilNITS Certification review to their classes. I then decided to teach this Certification Review as one of the ICT subjects under Advance Topics. By teaching the PhilNITS Curriculum to my students, it does not only updates their IT skills but also prepares them to take the certification exam immediately right after they graduate thus increases their chance of landing high paying IT jobs here and abroad.

The successful implementation of the XSystem 2007

The enrolment period for 2nd semester 2007-2008 is about to end tomorrow. Around 300 students from the Institute of ICT had undergone the pilot implementation of the XSystem 2007, an ASP.Net web application that automates the registration, assessment, and database management of student records. The system is also powered by ASP.Net AJAX web extensions and was now uploaded to the PSU Eastern Cluster co-colocated server which is currently hosting the PSU Official Website running on a Windows Server 2003 Application Server.

These ICT students can now access their individual Student Portals where they can view their Permanent Records and Assessment Ledgers. All they have to do is to personally get their login accounts to the XSystem Administrator to enable them to login to their portals for the first time then they can immediately change their passwords in the Change Password section once they are logged in. Parents who are also interested in the academic standings of their children can make a request to the XSystem Administrator to get their sons’/daughters’ login accounts and they will be able to see the academic and financial information of their children through the internet. This is surely a bad news to some students out there, nothing to hide from their parents this time, no more lies especially when talking about your fees.

The successful implementation of the XSystem 2007 will surely serve as a turning point for more improvements in the university and hopefully marks the importance of the proper utilization of the university’s ICT resources and manpower. This is just one of the home-grown programs that the MIS Department and the Institute of ICT offers and I hope that the university will give it the support and attention it really deserves.
